Following Career hindsight, a few more learnings about career.
Let me know if you want me to dig deeper into any of these.
1. Don't be a one-trick pony. Sharpen at least two weapons.
2. Good outcomes are mostly luck. But luck can be cultivated.
3. Networks are more potent than skills. Talk to 5 people every day.
4. Salaries are not your worth. They're just a reflection of your perceived contribution.
5. Starting a company should be a last resort.
6. Sleep. Nutrition. Family. Work. Always in that order.
7. Strategy first, then tactics. Have a strategy for your career. It starts by figuring out what makes you happy.
8. Don't expect fairness. Nothing is fair. What matters are your goals and what you're willing to give to realize them.
9. Be loyal to people. Not to companies.
10. If you haven't learned something today, you've taken one step backward.
11. Management is not for everyone. Leadership is for deranged people.
12. Remember. It's just work.
13. Invest time and energy in your work relationships. They will pay dividends for the rest of your life.
14. If you don't feel out of your depth, you're not growing.
15. Middle managers make or break organizations. The job usually sucks.
16. If you live in a country and don't speak the language ...
17. Expertise is overrated. The more you know about something, the more you're frozen in time.
18. You can learn how to do things right. You can't learn how to do the right things.
19. Plan and follow your plan. You'll be ahead of 98% of the population.
20. Write a cover letter.
